 Plot Involvement
Garlic Jr., Trunks, & Android Sagas
Trunks is the first character from the future to appear in the show and debuts in DBZ as a mysterious young man who challenges the recently resuscitated Frieza and his father King Cold. Having masked his power level, Trunks was quickly viewed as a feeble adversary who posed absolutely no danger, that is until he made quick work of Frieza's henchmen in a elegant display of swordsmanship. Afterward, Frieza relives his worst fear as Trunks unexpectedly transforms into a Super Saiyan. Following the transformation Trunks quickly disposes of both Frieza and King Cold, also destroying their spaceship. After the battle, Trunks turns his attention to the Z-Warriors, who finally emerged from hiding, and informs them that Goku would be arriving in a few hours time just a short distance from where they were. Dumbfounded and confused, the Z-Warriors reluctantly elect to follow the young Saiyan to the rendezvous point. Soon after, a spacepod comes crashing down, and as Trunks predicted Goku steps out of the pod and greets them. Trunks requests a private meeting with Goku, and they both fly off a short distance away. Before he gives an introduction, Trunks tests Goku by having him transform into a Super Saiyan and then attacks him with his sword. Parrying the sword with a finger, Goku gains Trunks's trust and they proceed to their serious conversation. Trunks identifies himself as Bulma and Vegeta's son who traveled twenty years from the future to warn Goku and the others that in about three years, a deadly duo of androids will appear, created by Dr.Gero, the former head scientist of the Red Ribbon Army that Goku destroyed in the events depicted in Dragonball. After the conclusion of their meeting, Trunks enters his time machine and returns to his time.
Imperfect & Perfect Cell & Cell Games Sagas
After hearing of the possiblity of a second Time Machine existing, Gohan goes with Trunks to investigate, later being met by Bulma. They soon find it, as well as a big egg shell casing inside, but the machine isn't Trunks' as his is safely sealed in a capsule. Being none-the-wiser as to what is going on they leave, take the new Time Machine, Trunks heads off. Later on, as they learn of the existence of Cell, he investigates Dr Gero's lab with Krillin, hoping to be able to destroy the Cell in their time while it is still growing and also uncover anything to help them deal with the Androids. After finding some blueprints, they destroy the lab and leave, giving the blueprints to Bulma to see if she can find a weakness.
Trunks then sets about finding his father, but despite his efforts, Vegeta doesn't want anything to do with him, so he resides to waiting and hoping he will come around. During this time, Goku and Gohan arrive, telling them of a place where they can train for one year and only one day will pass in their time. The four of them head to Kami's lookout where Vegeta demands that he use the room first. Goku agrees to this but pursuades him to take Trunks with him too. Their training begins and they train for the full year, as they leave, Trunks agrees to Vegeta's demand of not speaking about the training they went through and the two of them head off to deal with Cell.
Soon they find Cell, who by now has already absorbed one Android and is trying to absorb the other, but Vegeta demands a fight with Cell. With his increased strength, Vegeta easily overpowers Cell to the point that Vegeta is actually disappointed in the fight. It's then that Cell offers Vegeta the chance to fight him at a stronger level if he lets him absorb Android #18. Despite Trunks and Krillin's protests, Vegeta agrees even going as far as attacking Trunks to stop him from interveening. Cell absorbs #18 and Krillin begins to regret his decision of not deactivating her. With the transformation complete, Cell takes on Vegeta again and this time overpowers him, even Vegeta's new Final Flash attack is no good against Cell. It doesn't take long for Vegeta to be beaten unconscious, Trunks takes over the fight, telling Krillin that he didn't interfere earlier because he was stronger than Vegeta and didn't want to hurt his father's pride. But soon Trunks realises that his extra strength is no help at all, because his speed is greatly comprimised, admitting defeat Trunks surrenders. But Cell doesn't kill him, he says they should all come in 10 days time and fight him again at a tournament, hoping they would all be stronger by then and give him a good fight. Trunks, and a revived Vegeta, head back to the Room of Spirit and Time for more training in preparation for the Cell Games.
Finally the day for the Cell Games arrives and they all gather to fight Cell. Goku fights him first but he gives up part the way through the fight, insisting that Gohan is stronger than him and should fight instead. Gohan is unsure about this but agrees to fight and initially doesn't seem to be making much progress. Cell is disappointed in this and wonders why Goku sent out Gohan to fight him as he was expecting a better fight. Gohan explains that when he gets angry he unlocks strength, so Cell decides to release Cell Jrs and attack Goku, Vegeta and the others in an attempt to make Gohan angry. Despite all this it doesn't seem to be enough to push Gohan over the edge, even when he realises everyone there but Trunks has died once before and as such, can't be revived again. Android #16, who also joined the others to fight Cell makes an attempt to destroy Cell by self destructing himself. But unknown to him, his bomb was removed by Bulma so his plan was a failure. Cell then destroys #16 himself, smashing him to pieces. #16's head remains intact and he talks to Gohan, telling him it's okay to get angry, if he's fighting for good. Cell gets irritated by #16's noise and smashes his head, totally destroying him, this is what sends Gohan into a rage, pushing him over the edge and transforming him into a Super Saiyan 2. In his transformed state he is easily a match for Cell, even begins to toy with him despite Goku and the others asking for him to finish Cell. This leads to Gohan's downfall, as Cell realises he cannot win he decides to make a desperate move - self destructing, an explosion powerful enough to destroy the whole planet. There's nothing Gohan can do and as he dispairs at his mistake Goku steps in, telling Gohan he did well, then teleporting himself and Cell away, sacrificing himself to save them all.
Gohan is distraught that his actions have ultimately lead to the death of his father but before he can mourn the loss Cell reappears, and aims a beam randomally, killing Trunks instantly.
After the battle with Cell is won, Trunks is revived to life by the Dragon Balls and a day later he returns home to his time. With all the skills and training he recieved during his stay in the other time he easily disposes of Androids #17, #18 and Cell, who in his timeline is in his much weaker, Imperfect form. With the threats to his time gone, Trunks goes back to rebuilding his life.
 The TV Special
Furthermore, he appeared in the TV Special The History of Trunks, which shows his past. Trunks also appeared in the non canonical Dragonball Z films Super Android 13, Broly: The Legendary Super Saiyan, and Bojack Unbound. In "The Hisotry of Trunks", Trunks the protagonist of the special created by Toei Animation, is from the future where he is a young teen. He lives with his mother Bulma. In that period, Androids 18 and 17 were released, they betrayed Dr.Gero like in the present timeline we all know. Goku is killed by the heart virus, and the z warriors are also killed in the battle against the androids. It is not known how one of the Z fighters "Gohan" survived. Gohan or as you can call Future Gohan is a survivor who has turned into a Super Saiyan like his father, "Goku". As Trunks and Bulma are driving to their house, Trunks goes off to fight the androids after hearing about them in the automobile radio. He then meets Future Gohan, who then trains Trunks to become a Super Saiyan and fight along with him. After Future Gohan and Future Trunks go to fight the androids and lose, Future Gohan knows he will have a disadvantage the next fight; if he fights the androids with him. The androids make an explosion in a nearby city, and Trunks wants to join in. Knowing that Future Trunks is a disadvantage and he knows both will probably die if they go, he karate chops Trunks; Trunks then faints. After Trunks wakes up, he goes to the city to find the dead corpse of Future Gohan, and then Trunks turns into a Super Saiyan. 3 years later, Trunks is over confident and goes to the androids thinking he will win, he then loses and almost nearly dies from the androids. Then it is seen that Bulma gives him the antidote to give to goku in the past.
Trunks, like most characters in the Dragonball universe, can manipulate his ki, which allows him to fly, possess super human strength, and fire ki blasts. He is also capable of performing the Super Saiyan transformation, as well as both of that transformation's advanced grades. He is also a highly skilled swordsman.
