He is introduced as the King of all Saiyans and father of Vegeta and briefly appears in the special Bardock, the father of Goku, as well as in several flashbacks. He is forced to give the Prince to Frieza while he is very young. A short time after, King Vegeta and a group of Saiyans stage an attack on Frieza in an attempt to free their race. The attack fails and King Vegeta is killed by Frieza. Prior to these events, it was also revealed that the Saiyans, under King Vegeta's command were at war with the Tuffle race, a race that wasn't necessarily known for their battle prowess, but rather their advanced technology as compared to the Saiyans. After a brutal battle, the Tuffles were defeated and the Saiyans gained both their planet, and their technology.

He is also mentioned in the 8th Dragonball Z movie: Broly, the Legendary Super Saiyan, where a Saiyan named Broly was introduced. When Broly was young, King Vegeta feared his tremendous powerlevel and ordered both Broly, and his father Paragas, executed. They escaped this faith however, and Paragas swore revenge on the King. With King Vegeta killed by Frieza however, Paragas decided to extract revenge on his son instead, an attempt which was thwarted by Broly's arch-rival, Goku.
