Akira Toriyama

Akira Toriyama is the creator of Dragonball, and Dragonball Z.

Creator of the Dragonball universe, Akira Toriyama was born in Kiyosu, Aichi Prefecture, Japan on April 5th 1955. Toriyama started the series in 1984, as Manga chapters of Dragonball would be published in Weekly Shonen Jump.

He produced the Manga for eleven years, reaching the conclusion in 1995. By this point, there were a total of 519 chapters spreading across 42 volumes.

Dragonball was not Toriyama's first work though. He made his publishing debut on the Manga scene back in 1978 with a 2-shott story called Wonder Island. He became famous through his series Dr. Slump, serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump from 1980 until 1984, making up 18 volumes of Manga.

Through the years Toriyama has made many new series, although since Dragonball finished these have all been very short stories, such as Sand Land. His most released published work is a self-parody called Neko Majin Z.

As well as producing Manga, Toriyama has also made character designs and artwork for several video games such as Chrono Trigger, Tobal No. 1, Blue Dragon, and the very popular Dragon Quest series of games. He continues this line of work to this day.
